Technology is a big part of the library. In order to keep up we sponsor technology workshops. This year featured:
Intermediate Blackboard Skills
Rubrics, Assignment Tool, Quizzes and Tests, Grade Center
Google docs, Google sites, Google books
How to incorporate i-pads in your teaching
- The folks from Best Buy will have tablets and e-readers on hand for you to test-drive. No obligation to buy — just explore — during this technology petting zoo.
- After the expo I had to know more… here is a recent article with great information. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20009738-1/kindle-vs-nook-vs-ipad-which-e-book-reader-should-you-buy/
Browsers… What are they and what do they work with? A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_browser Now, what do they work with.. Here at Elmhurst College the Library uses at least 5 different browsers, as shown above, and many more than 5 information resources, WordPress, Ebsco, Bluenet, and Blackboard. This is a topic talked about in classes. Browsers are named then as an example, students are told that they will be in let’s say EBSCO today so they need to use Mozilla Firefox or told that the library has been having blackboard issues with the newer versions of IE and Mozilla. They are reminded that right clicking and opening in a new window is a good habit to get into because is the most successful at printing in many cases. Issues are reported and work a rounds are made.. Students can access information.
Blackboard 9 is now available. With a new update comes many questions. Some new features are very exciting, but others are not so great. One thing that was taken away was the Digital Dropbox. This has a work a round if you use assignments. We are all learning this together. We will take it one step at a time. Should be an interesting year.
